Let's Roll Mobility July 28, 2024 4 min read
byACRE walkers are more than just mobility aids; they are a symbol of freedom, empowering individuals to explore the outdoors without limitations. Their durability, versatility, and innovative design make them an ideal choice for those seeking an active lifestyle, irrespective of mobility challenges.
A common question we get asked by our customers is "why would I choose the Overland walker over the Ultralight", and vice versa.
In this article, we will outline the key differences, benefits, and considerations when deciding between these two amazing rollators.
First, it is important to identify the common features between both models. These features are at the heart of all byACRE rollators and are what makes them so unique and life-changing.
Firstly the world-renowned carbon fiber frame is the same on both rollators. You'll receive all the benefits of carbon fiber including its lightweight properties whilst being sturdy and firm when you need it most.
Both rollators are backed by a manufacturer's lifetime warranty on the frame and two years on all other parts.
The brake cables are painstakingly hidden in the frame for a sleek appearance. With them being out of sight, it reduces the risk of them getting caught on trailing branches, door handles, etc which can lead to costly repairs.
On both rollators the adjustable ergonomic handles and folding seat placement is designed to allow the user to stand and walk inside the frame, supporting an upright posture and safer stride.
Both models have two discreet curb lifters built into the frame, allowing you to easily navigate raised curbs in your neighborhood.
The same accessories are available for both the Overland and Ultralight. The backrest, and cane holders are a darker gray for the Overland. The weekend, day pack and grocery bags fit on both rollators.
The travel bag is black for the Overland and slightly larger versus the light gray of the Ultralight equivalent.
The Overland has the same dimensions as a wide-track Ultralight. You get the same handle height from 31.5-37.4" and the 18.5" seat width. The seat also sits at 24" off the ground on both.
One thing to consider it the weight the 4lbs weight difference between the models. Both rollators are extremely lightweight, with the Overland weighing in at 14 lbs and the Ultralight at 10 lbs.
Having said that, the 4 lbs can make a significant difference to the user, or caregiver, when placing the rollator in the back seat or trunk of the car.
Conversely, the extra bulk of the Overland can be reassuring to some customers as it makes the rollators feel more grounded and secure when they are resting their weight on it.
The Ultralight comes with solid, puncture-proof wheels for peace of mind. These are great for everyday surfaces such as flooring in the home, sidewalks, and short grass.
The wheels on the Overland are 10" in diameter, 2" larger than the Ultralight. They are also air-filled and have deeper treads like those of a bike. This makes them ideal for tackling more rugged terrains like the beach and trails. The deep tread and larger surface area allow the rollator to grip more effectively, which also makes the brakes more responsive.
The wheels on the Overland have inner tubes that allow them to be air-filled. This does open up the possibility of a puncture but it is so rare. In the unlikely event of a puncture, the wheel can be topped up with air and then easily repaired or replaced like repairing a bike tire. We can also supply replacement inner tubes if needed.
The air in the wheels provides extra cushioning, especially on harder terrain, which reduces vibrations and in turn a comfortable ride.
The Overland also has sealed bearings that enable the exploration of coastlines and lakes without the fear of the wheels seizing up.
The Overland walkers are engineered with precision, offering stability on various terrains – from rugged trails of Mount Rainier to city streets because of the upgraded suspension.
The Overland can support a user of up to 330 lbs because of the uprated wheels and suspension. The Ultralight is rated up to 286 lbs.
If you are nearer those limits, please also take into consideration the maximum seat width of both models (18.5") if you do consider using the seat.
The Overland is designed to tackle the great outdoors and has a color pallet to match. The Bentley Brown and Defender Green allow it to complement its surroundings.
The Ultralight has a vibrant selection of colors, including eye-catching Strawberry Red, the timeless British Racing Green, and the classic Royal Blue. If you looking for a more discreet color, we recommend the Caron Black or the Oyster White which we describe as pearl-like.
At the time of writing, the Overland retails for $110 more than the Ultralight. Although you are considering buying a top-of-the-range walker, the extra cost is something to be considered if budget is a limiting factor.
The decision on which rollator to purchase is such a personal one as it is dependent on many considerations, including a customer's mobility limitations, tastes, and how broad their horizons are in terms of travel and tackling the outdoors.
Whatever choice you make, you won't be disappointed with the byACRE rollator you receive. It takes a special device to break the stigma associated with the antiquated market of mobility aids. The byACRE product line is the first to do this. It is no longer seen as a mobility aid, but a "lifestyle enhancer".
